Mediterranean forest
 On this route we will cross dense forests of oak trees bathed by meandering streams and dotted with small reservoirs and ponds.

 Key species :

Residents: Iberian Azure-winged Magpie, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Golden Eagle, Eagle Owl, Black-shouldered Kite, Little Owl, Lesser spotted woodpecker, Iberian grey Shrike, Hoopoe, etc.

Summer visitors: Woodchat Shrike, Egyptian Vulture, Short-toed (Snake) Eagle, Booted Eagle, Hobby, Red-rumped Swallow, European Bee-eater, Golden Oriol, Great spotted Cuckoo, etc.

Winter visitors: Common Crane, Song thrush, Redwing, Siskin, etc.

The pseudosteppe
Steppe-lands is an unexpected habitat, resident birds as Great and Little bustards live here all-year-round but move considerably in the area. During migration, temporal ponds scattered in the area attract many migrants and in the open sky, many raptors species wander around.

Residents: Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Calandra Lark, Stone Curlew, etc

Summer visitors: Montagus Harrier, Black-eared Wheatear, Lesser Kestrel, European Roller, etc.

Winter visitors: Golden Plover, Hen harrier, Merlin, Common Crane, etc.

Spanish dehesa
This is the most common habitat in the area, offering the best chance to observe especialties such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle and Iberian Azure-winged Magpie.

 Key species :

Residents: Thekla lark, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Raven, Rock Bunting, Azure-winged Magpie, Blue Rock Thrush, Spanish Imperal Eagle, etc.

Summer visitors: Black Strok, Egyptian Vulture, European Bee-eater, Sand Martin, Short-toed (Snake) Eagle, Booted Eagle, etc.

Winter visitors: Common Crane, Song Thrush, Redwing, lapwing, etc.

Reservoirs and rivers
This habitat support a great variety of birds, especially waterfowl in winter and waders on passage.

Residents: Great Crested Grebe, Great Cormoran, Grey Heron, Gadwall, etc.

Summer visitors: Osprey (migrant), Little Tern, Spoonbill, Little Ringed Plover, etc.

Winter visitors: Northen Pintail, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Crane, Greylag Goose, Shoveler, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Egret, etc.

Pine forest and rocky areas
Dense coniferous forests support local species as the Citril finch which together with rock species make it an interesting ecosystem.

Bonelli´s Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Coal tit, Crested tit, Citril finch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Peregrin Falcon, European Jay, Rock Bunting, etc.

Alpine habitats
Over 1700 m.a.s.l we will walk through alpine habitats and great scenery.

Key species :

Northern Wheatear, Alpine Accentor, Hortelan Bunting, Peregrine Falcon, Common Snipe, Red-backed Shrike, Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush, Whinchat, Cinereus Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Golden Eagle, etc.

Recommended season: Spring and Autumn

Extremadura: Monfragüe National Park
With the largest Cinereous Vulture population in Europe, Monfragüe National Park is a must visit place for any birder. Along the ridge mountain over the Tagus and Tiétar river, numerous bird species nest on its cliffs as the Griffon Vulture, Black Stork, Egyptian Vulture, etc.

Key species :

Bonelli´s Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Peregrine Falcon, Egyptian Vulture, Black Stork, Black kite, Egyptian Vulture, White-rumped Swift, Red-rumped Swallow, etc.

Recommended season: All year

Extremadura: Arrocampo Ornithological Park
In the outskirts of Monfragüe, this park offer good opportunities to observe birds which are difficult to find elsewhere close by.

Key species :

Residents: Spanish Sparrow, Black-shouldered kite, Purple Swamphen, Eurasian Coot, White Stork, etc.

Summer visitors: Gull-billed Tern, Black kite, Purple Heron, Little Bittern, Savi´s Warbler, etc.

Winter visitors: Great Bittern, Sparrowhawk, Glossy Ibis, Bluethroat, etc.

Recommended season: All year

All birding destinations are located within 1 hour drive from Candeleda. For destinations close to Candeleda, trips usually start at 8:00 AM. For destinations which involve around 1 hour drive, the start time is 7:00 AM.
